New York Cares volunteers have kicked-off the tax season and are working hard to help families experiencing economic hardship. Last year, the average return was $1,800 to families making less than $54,000 – which adds up to a staggering $20 million in refunds and credits to low-income New Yorkers.
We are still recruiting volunteers to help prepare taxes at more than 60 sites in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens as the need increases and the season gets busier.
Does this sound like the volunteer opportunity for you? Check out our frequently asked questions and email us at email@example.com. We will streamline the process and get you out at a tax site as soon as possible!
No past tax preparation or accounting experience is necessary, though we do encourage professional accountants and those pursuing related to degrees to volunteer, too! There are a few required steps to becoming a tax volunteer:
Step 1: Make sure your New York Cares profile is up to date. If you are a new volunteer to New York Cares, please register for an orientation and email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to let us know you're interested in the tax program.
Step 3: Send a copy of your certification to email@example.com and we will reply with everything you need to get registered for a site and shift.
(Optional) Step 4: Attend an in-person training to learn more about how the program works and to practice your skills
Step 5: Get started volunteering and put critical funds back in the pocket of low-income New Yorkers.

Team Leaders are needed at each of our tax sites to ensure volunteers, partners, and clients, have a great experience. Tax Team Leaders do not have to be trained tax preparers, but will be given leadership training by New York Cares. Sound like the role for you? Sign up here.

New York Cares will not file your taxes. VITA Tax Preparation is an equal opportunity provider. Anyone earning less than $54,000/year qualifies for New York City’s Free Tax Preparation services; however, some limitations apply. Some returns may be too complex for volunteer assistance and considered out of scope. Services are offered January 22 — April 17, 2018.
If you have volunteered with the New York Cares VITA Program in the past, you simply recertify online and send a copy of your certificate to firstname.lastname@example.org. We will send you the sites and shifts that need your help and get you registered right away.
