New York Cares' Tax Prep Program provides free income tax preparation services to low and moderate-income individuals and families. Tax filing is a requirement of almost every individual or family in every community and city across the United States. But some families are battling new anxieties each day—ranging from the affordability of groceries and school supplies to the rising costs of bills and rent. Few can manage the added expense of a paid tax preparer.
That's where New York Cares' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers come in. Our volunteers are trained as tax preparers and meet with clients one-on-one to file their taxes from mid-January through mid-April.
No past tax preparation or accounting experience is necessary, though we do encourage those professional accountants and those pursuing related to degrees to volunteer, too! New volunteers are required to attend six hours of in-person training and complete an online course and test that will certify you as a volunteer tax preparer through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.
If this sounds like the volunteer opportunity for you, sign up for our general interest campaign and be the first to receive updates about upcoming information sessions, training, and other news from the tax team this October!
