Lead Tax Prep for Low-Income New Yorkers

Imagine the difference an extra $1,800 can make for a struggling family. That was the amount of the average return from our Tax Preparation program in 2016, and it added up to a staggering $20 million in refunds and credits for low-income New Yorkers.

We've got nearly 400 volunteers signed up and 50 sites where clients will be coming in for tax prep services, but we still need Team Leaders to run these sites. As a Tax Prep Team Leader, you will:

  • Take attendance and track the number of returns completed at each site for each shift of volunteers
  • Work with the Community Partner organization to troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
  • NOT prepare taxes. Team leaders no longer need to be trained on tax preparation, but will only be supervising the trained volunteers who will do so.

To become a Tax Prep Team Leader, express your interest by clicking 'Leader Project' on our special Tax Prep project page, or by contacting our Tax Prep Program Manager, Ahdenah Glass, at

Missed the deadline to become a volunteer?

Volunteers interested in Income Tax Preparation but missed the deadline for training can still participate in critical services for our Tax Prep partner organizations. Many of the agencies we work with to deliver our tax preparation services need help in other ways during tax season. For example,  we are looking for volunteers to educate New Yorkers about best saving practices, asset building, and with client intake during our tax prep shifts. Sign up for the project below and New York Cares staff will be in touch as soon as we have opportunities scheduled.
