Meets pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service.

Youth Volunteering

Opportunities for teens and families to volunteer in New York City.

New York Cares Youth Volunteering Teen Volunteer Projects

Our service opportunities for volunteers under the age of 18 are designed to get New York City youth actively engaged in the community.

Whether you want to learn about social issues that face New York City or are just looking for a fun way to spend a Saturday, New York Cares has dozens of opportunities to choose from.

Kids (ages 6 and older): Join us on a Family Friendly project by volunteering alongside your parent or legal guardian.

Teens (ages 14 and older): Recruit your friends or classmates and register as a Teen Group, led by a trained mentor who is 21 or older.

For more information on volunteer opportunities for youth and for seasonal opportunities with New York Cares, see options below.

Please note: Volunteers under the age of 18 may not create accounts on the New York Cares website, or volunteer without a parent or trained Group Leader.

Opportunities for Teens and Families

Our Teen Friendly projects are perfect for getting teens in your school or community group involved in their neighborhoods.  Please note that all teen groups require a trained adult (21 or older) to participate.

Volunteering is a meaningful way to spend time together as a family. We offer a number of "Family-Friendly" projects that allow volunteers to serve alongside their children.

More Opportunities

We welcome youth volunteers to join adult chaperones to revitalize public schools and clean and green parks and gardens on New York Cares Day Fall and Spring.

Since the Coat Drive began 27 years ago, we have collected and distributed 1.7 million winter coats to New Yorkers in need. Find out how you can participate.

Our Winter Wishes program provides holiday toys and gifts to over 42,000 children and families each year.

Other Opportunities

Many organizations offer opportunities for youth under the age of 18 to volunteer on their own. View our list of New York City nonprofits that welcome youth volunteers, or visit or for more service opportunities.

Changes to Our Youth Service Programs

As New York Cares embarks on a new strategic effort to effectively engage more youth and adult volunteers, we have decided to reevaluate our Youth Service Club and Teen Service Team program offerings. In the meantime, please consider taking advantage of our Teen Group Volunteering and Family Friendly Volunteering projects.
