Tax Prep | Volunteer FAQ

I'm unable to attend one or two of my tax shifts. What should I do?

We understand schedules change and unexpected circumstances come up, which is why Tax Prep volunteers are allowed to miss 3 weekly shifts or 2 bi-weekly shifts over the course of the tax season. Just be sure to contact your Team Leader by email or phone in advance.

Will I be trained to prepare taxes?

You betcha! We offer a wide range of free in-person trainings for volunteers during the day, evenings, and weekends leading up to the start of the tax season in January. Refer to this graph (link Decision Tree PDF) to help you figure out where to go from here.

Am I liable for the accuracy of the tax returns I prepare?

Not to worry, all New York Cares tax returns are quality reviewed by an experienced preparer at the tax site. They are then reviewed once more by the tax site manager before being submitted to the IRS. Community Partners are ultimately responsible for the tax return accuracy, not our volunteers.
