Meets pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service.

Become a Sophomore Skills Tutor

Give high school students the academic skills they need to succeed to get into college on a Sophomore Skills tutoring project.

Prepare High School Sophomores for their Future

We need your support in helping NYC public high school students build their foundational skills in Math and English! The Sophomore Skills program is designed to provide intensive tutoring in math, reading, and writing, which helps students excel on the SAT and in their core classes. This year, 110 volunteers at schools and community centers will empower over 600 students to improve their chances of getting into the college of their choice.

Join us this season as we help students get a jump-start on making their dreams a reality!

Tutor Math or English this Spring

If you’ve never volunteered with the program before, come join us for a mandatory 2-hour tutor training at the New York Cares office before your first session.

Are you new to New York Cares? No worries! All you have to do is attend a one-hour new volunteer orientation and express your interest in Sophomore Skills to immediately get signed up for one of our trainings.

Sophomore Skills projects run weekly from March through early June on weekday evenings (from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.) and Saturdays (from 10:00 to 12:00 p.m.) at 18 locations throughout the city. Upon completion of the training, you will have the opportunity to choose your time, day, and location. See you there.
