I’m trying to access my account but am having trouble logging in. What should I do?

If you can't remember your log-in information (don’t worry, you’re not the first) or are getting an error message that says what you've entered is incorrect, click here to request an email with a link to reset your password. If your email address can't be found, it’s possible you set up your account using a different email. If your log-in information still isn't working, check out our troubleshooting tips or send us an email at to let us know.

The website looks a little funny. The homepage has text displaying in strange places. Any ideas?

Stay calm. Website display issues can often be resolved by updating your web browser, or by ensuring that you are viewing our website at 100% zoom. You can typically adjust the zoom in the View tab of your internet browser. If things still look funny, email with a screenshot of what you’re seeing.

I’m having trouble searching for projects. Where do I begin?

With hundreds of volunteer opportunities happening each month, you may not know where to begin. Have no fear, we’re here to break things down step by step. Start by visiting our Search page to begin browsing project options by interest area, availability, location and preference. If you need additional guidance, check out our video overview on how to search for projects and learn about other features of our website here. Still having trouble? Call our Project Sign Up line (212) 402-1103 to review project options with a staff member by phone.

My contact information recently changed. How do I update my account?

Thanks for keeping us in the loop! Once logged into your account, click on your name at the top right corner of the page to be taken to your My Profile page. Next, click the Edit tab to update basic contact information or account preferences. Once edited, be sure to click "Save" to update your changes.

The website is telling me I can’t sign up for projects, but I already went to orientation. What’s happening?

We’re glad to hear you’re ready to get out there and volunteer! If it's within a day or two of the orientation, it’s possible that your attendance has not been entered just yet. However, if it's been longer, there could be something else going on. If that’s the case, send us an email at

I'm trying to create an account but am not from the US and therefore, don't have a US phone number or address. What should I do?

We welcome all volunteers – local and international alike, and would love to have you volunteer. But as you may have noticed, our website won’t accept international numbers in any of the phone fields. This is because we need a local number on file in case an emergency arises. Instead, we recommend listing someone in the area – maybe an acquaintance or friend in the US or your hotel or hostel’s number to ensure we have some way of reaching you in an emergency or last minute cancellation.

When I search for projects some have icons. What do the icons mean?

Volunteers commit to multiple sessions. Click on the project title for dates.

Volunteer with your children or legal ward. Click on the project title for age limits.

This exciting project is a staff pick.

Volunteer with friends or co-workers (ages 18+).

Save this project which may not happen without more volunteers.

For groups of teens (ages 14+) accompanied by a group leader (age 21+) who has completed the Teen Group Leader training.

What's the significance of the star icon next to project listings on the Search page?

Our website allows you to bookmark projects if an opportunity sounds interesting, but you're unsure if you can make it. Simply click the star icon to watch it change colors and have the project added to the Bookmarked Projects section of your My Profile page. Think of it as adding an item to your cart when shopping online. We'll also send you a when registration is going to close and space is still available.
