Zero Waste at the Jazz Age Lawn Party with Earth Matter

The Annual Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island is a prohibition era inspired gathering that offers the magical opportunity to travel back in time. For two days this June, guests are invited to immerse themselves in one of the most colorful and formative epochs in American history.

Join Earth Matter NY to make Jazz Age a Zero Waste event! We need volunteers to help
staff the recycling stations, ensure the streams are well sorted and help educate event-goers about separating their food scraps and compostable serviceware from recyclables and landfill-bound waste. Gloves, aprons, pickers, and training will be provided for everyone.

Come and learn about Zero Waste and exercise your public skills. Stay for the sights, sounds, and spectacular dance performances!

Volunteers will get to enjoy the party before or after their shift.
Note: the project time includes the ferry ride to and from the island (1 pm ferry and 6 pm ferry)

Earth Matter NY Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, and application of composting in and around New York City. Their aim is to reduce the organic waste misdirected into the garbage stream by encouraging neighbor participation and leadership in composting. They accept and process food waste as part of DSNY’s NYC Compost Project, and their Compost Learning Center is located on Governors Island, where they host a variety of chickens year-round and goats, rabbits, worms, and bees during the open season (May-September). They also collect and process food scraps from different events on Governors Island.
