PS 188 M — The Island School

 PS 188 M, a community school, serves as a one-stop service center for students and families. They offer counseling, a health clinic, caregiver development programs, and computer/internet access as well as extended day, vacation and summer programs. Volunteers will complete tasks to help transform the learning environment including painting murals, planting school gardens, organizing classrooms and more!

Located on the Lower East Side, PS/MS 188 serves students in Pre-K to 8th grade. Many of its 415 students come from families living in poverty. Employing a “full-service community school model,” PS/MS 188 collaborates with local health centers, music schools, colleges, and other organizations. Designated as a “high needs” school in October 2007, PS/MS 188 has succeeded in increasing academic achievement and has developed technology and arts programs. 89.6% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
