Nazareth Housing is a nonprofit agency that provides temporary housing for transitional families. They own several apartment units within Alphabet City as well as a small computer lab. They work with the families and children in their shelters to find more permanent housing while they look for permanent employment. Nazareth Housing began as a grassroots effort on the Lower East Side to support the housing needs of families, especially women with children, and those most vulnerable to economic, ethnic or gender disparity in obtaining stable and safe housing. In the 1970s more than 700 Lower East Side apartment buildings, abandoned by their owners, resulted in the displacement of some 9,000 families. The number of people in substandard housing or rendered homeless rose steadily. Poor residents struggled to survive each day as many experienced the following indignities: reduced to living in squalid housing - often as squatters; surrounded by an economy driven by illegal drug sales; poor access to public transportation and little opportunity for gainful employment.Mission Statement of Nazareth Housing Our Vision: To empower individuals and families to overcome barriers to safe and secure housingOur MissionNazareth Housing is committed to the promotion of housing stability and economic independence among poor families and youth of New York City, through the provision of:*Transitional shelter*Homelessness prevention services* Self-sufficiency education* Supportive housing* Youth programmingOur ValuesWe believe in:* Compassion* Family Well-being* Responsibility* Integrity* Self-sufficiency
