Lavender Field Maintenance with Earth Matter

Lavender Field Maintenance with Earth Matter

Help us maintain NYC's only Lavender Field on Governors Island! As a volunteer you will help with the following: replanting lavender, removal of invasive species, applying mulch, harvesting plants, pruning plants, monitoring and surveying plants, applying compost, help set up and maintain the drip irrigation system, rebuild lavender mounds, painting and more!

Volunteers will be working outside and might get dirty. Please make sure to wear appropriate clothes, bring water and sun protection.

Note: the project time includes the ferry ride from and to the Island.

Earth Matter NY Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, and application of composting in and around New York City. Their aim is to reduce the organic waste misdirected into the garbage stream by encouraging neighbor participation and leadership in composting. They accept and process food waste as part of DSNY’s NYC Compost Project, and their Compost Learning Center is located on Governors Island, where they host a variety of chickens year-round and goats, rabbits, worms, and bees during the open season (May-September). They also collect and process food scraps from different events on Governors Island.
