Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is a grassroots, human rights organization dedicated to securing and protecting the rights of disenfranchised Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and New York since 2001. In Queens there is a large population of Afghan families who have imported to this country many of the conservative aspects of their culture, meaning, among other things, that the women have never been to school, are illiterate in their own language and have not learned English. In addition to helping the women and girls from these families with financial, health and immigration problems, we run ESL, computer, Citizenship and Driver’s Education classes as the first steps leading to their empowerment.
