Farming and Composting with Earth Matter

Earth Matter is committed to growing fresh nutritious produce to directly supply a local food pantry during the COVID-19 crisis. Volunteers will be mostly helping farm staff to grow and harvest the produce as well as helping to maintain compost piles.

Will be working on farmland so it's important to wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting dirty.

Earth Matter NY Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, and application of composting in and around New York City. Their aim is to reduce the organic waste misdirected into the garbage stream by encouraging neighbor participation and leadership in composting. They accept and process food waste as part of DSNY’s NYC Compost Project, and their Compost Learning Center is located on Governors Island, where they host a variety of chickens year-round and goats, rabbits, worms, and bees during the open season (May-September). They also collect and process food scraps from different events on Governors Island.
