Animal Care and Composting at Earth Matter - Governors Island

Ride the Governors Island Ferry to Governors Island. Enjoy a 15-minute nature walk to the Earth Matter Compost Learning Center where 72 chickens live year-round.

Please meet the group at the Governors Island ferry terminal and board the 9 am ferry together.

Volunteers will care for chickens by feeding and watering them. Then begin the composting process by layering sawdust and wood chips in the Hen House.

This project requires wheeling wheelbarrows and transporting containers of water short distances. It's completely outdoors working on farmland so it's important to wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting dirty and dress for the weather.

Earth Matter NY Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, and application of composting in and around New York City. Their aim is to reduce the organic waste misdirected into the garbage stream by encouraging neighbor participation and leadership in composting. They accept and process food waste as part of DSNY’s NYC Compost Project, and their Compost Learning Center is located on Governors Island, where they host a variety of chickens year-round and goats, rabbits, worms, and bees during the open season (May-September). They also collect and process food scraps from different events on Governors Island.
