Fort Greene Park, designated as Brooklyn’s first public park in 1847, is built on the site of a Revolutionary War fort also used in the War of 1812. Writer Walt Whitman argued that the green space was necessary for recreation and for honoring American soldiers who died aboard British prison ships in New York Harbor during the wars. Today, the 30-acre park features a basketball court, tennis courts and hosts many cultural events.
