Volunteering Questions

How do I sign up to volunteer on Cares Day for Schools?

Stay tuned for information on registration for next year's Cares Day!

This is my first time volunteering with New York Cares. Can I participate in Cares Day?

You used to be able to create a volunteer team! What happened?

To focus our resources and increase the impact of the event, New York Cares Day for Schools no longer offers online teaming functionality. Instead, we’re giving you the opportunity to get to know each school and choose one in your neighborhood or that you feel a connection with. If you want to serve with a group, each individual just needs to sign up for the same school site. You can share the link to your school’s profile page with family and friends via email or on social media!

What is the schedule for Cares Day?

The general schedule for the day is as follows. Start and end times will be the same at each school, but other aspects of the schedule may vary slightly:

9:30 a.m. - Volunteers Arrive for Registration
10:00 a.m. - Welcome and Orientation
10:30 a.m. - School Projects Begins

What types of tasks can I expect to do on Cares Day?

The projects have been customized specifically for each school to ensure you’re making the most meaningful impact possible. As a result, tasks will vary from school to school. Projects tend to include painting classrooms, gardening, sorting and organizing storage rooms and supplies, and other revitalization efforts that improve the learning environment.

What happens if it rains?

Nothing rains on our parade! Cares Day for Schools takes place rain or shine, so please come prepared with appropriate attire.

What should I wear?

Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are a must. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty or covered in paint, we recommend dressing in layers and bringing both sunscreen and rain gear.
