Volunteer Relations Associate

Reporting to the Volunteer Relations Officer, the Volunteer Relations Associate is responsible for proper supervision and support of our full volunteer database. New York Cares volunteers mobilize on a variety of projects city-wide, providing support to hundreds of thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers each year. This role is responsible for fostering an environment where volunteers can thrive by providing exceptional customer service and ensuring that all policies and procedures are upheld. To ensure a great volunteer experience, this role will elicit and provide feedback, and work through volunteer issues as they arise.


  • Monitor the screening of volunteers to ensure service eligibility for programs.
  • Curate a library of volunteer management resources for staff, such as briefs and trainings on how best to inspire service, create environments where volunteers are well utilized with meaningful tasks, and are thanked proportional to their role.
  • Enforce policies and procedures with volunteers and Team Leaders.
  • Support the resolution of volunteer issues and provide feedback to volunteers as needed.
  • Review volunteer evaluations and provide follow-up and feedback as needed.
  • Prepare volunteer letters of service.
  • Manage ongoing partnerships with organizations that work with special needs populations.
  • Support organization-wide initiatives such as Coat Drive, Back-to-School events, volunteer info-sessions by ensuring that volunteer FAQs are updated for website and volunteer inquiries.
  • Staff approximately 10 corporate service projects per year.

  • At least two (2) years of relevant professional experience; HS/HS school equivalency plus combination two (2) years relevant experience and/or post-secondary training/education considered.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; Spanish language fluency preferred.
  • Strong administrative skills and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), working knowledge of Outlook and Salesforce a plus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • The willingness to work beyond traditional working hours and schedules, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Good sense of humor & commitment to volunteerism.

About the Volunteer Support Team 

The Volunteer Support team applies customer relationship management (CRM) and customer service practices and expertise to our volunteer community. CRM is a system for managing relationships with a personalized one-on-one feel at scale, by utilizing a wide variety of technological tools such as Salesforce, Drupal, Mailchimp, and Zen Desk. This team orchestrates the flow of information through the Community Engagement, Program Design and Evaluation, and Volunteer Events departments, as well as the Volunteer Relations team, to provide single-point-of-contact support to our Team Leaders, as well as expedient and thoughtful customer service for inquiries received at our main inbox.
