Specialist, Impact and Evaluation

The Impact and Evaluation Specialist is a key member of the Community Partner Relations & Evaluation (CPRE) department and reports to the department’s Associate Director. This growing and dynamic team aims to ensure the successful creation, design, and implementation of programs to maximize social impact, through evaluation and support for our base of nearly 900 Community Partners – the nonprofit organizations, schools, and government agencies we work with to develop and deliver programs – and the communities they serve.

This position provides support for evaluation and research, particularly as it pertains to the impact of the organization’s programs. The Impact and Evaluation Specialist will be responsible for pulling, interpreting, and presenting data from the organization’s database, leading the collection of new quantitative and qualitative data, and supporting others in program design and implementation through research and related consultation. Ideal candidates for this role have exposure to program evaluation and have conducted research. Training and experience in this role will help the Impact and Evaluation Specialist continue to develop these skills.


Data collection and presentation

  • Collect, compile, interpret, and present data, using existing data sources like the New York Cares volunteer database as well as through primary research
  • Utilize interviews, focus groups, surveys, and/or other quantitative and qualitative research methods with New York Cares stakeholders to inform programmatic approaches
  • Support in the collection of data across New York Cares programming, and support other programs staff in determining how best to collect data
  • Help in the design and development of original research that will further New York Cares’ position as a thought leader and expert in the area of volunteer management


Internal consultation on research and evaluation

  • Support efforts by programs staff to evaluate the implementation and impact of programming, through consultation and support in the development of logic models and research plans, as well as through generating research briefs, literature reviews, and other desktop research
  • Work with the rest of the Community Partner Relations & Evaluation team to provide research and assessment to determine how to most effectively prioritize programming and partnerships
  • Collaborate cross-departmentally to provide contextual information to volunteers about their service through research, and to develop new ways to contextualize volunteers’ service


Organizational performance measurement

  • Work with the department’s Associate Director to develop and implement measurement practices that will evaluate organizational progress and shape strategies for improving volunteer and community partner experiences
  • Track key performance indicators and recommend improvements to organizational performance indicators and related data collection
  • Inform important impact-related strategic initiatives through research and stakeholder engagement



  • Supervise interns or part-time staff as needed
  • Other duties as assigned


Core Qualifications

  • Interest in and exposure to program evaluation
  • Quantitative and qualitative research experience
  • Clear and compelling written and verbal communication skills
  • Passion for creating a more equitable New York City


Other Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, in social sciences preferred, or at least two years of relevant professional experience
  • Ability to practice strategic thinking about organization-wide initiatives
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of audiences
  • Creativity and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to thoughtfully critique the work of the organization, with an evidence-based mindset
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to prioritize and manage many projects simultaneously and to set priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong administrative skills, and experience with MS Office and Outlook
  • Background and experience, or interest, in the field of volunteerism and service
  • Experience working with Salesforce or similar customer relationship management system preferred
  • Appreciation for occasional office shenanigans


Starting salary is $38,000 to $40,000 a year. We also provide excellent benefits including comprehensive health insurance, 403(b) employer matching contributions, life insurance, and ample paid time off.
