Officer, Public Spaces & Events

Do you thrive on figuring out event logistics, love helping others do good, and have experience managing a team? Does revitalizing parks, schools, and community gardens sound like an exciting way to invest your time and energy? The Public Spaces team at New York Cares is seeking an Officer, Public Spaces to engage thousands of volunteers each year to do just that. Our volunteer-led projects include painting community spaces, creating murals, planting flowers, building and maintaining garden beds, and removing invasive species. Reporting to the Director, Immediate Needs & Public Spaces, the Officer is part of a 4-person leadership team in our Immediate Needs & Public Spaces department.

Responsibilities

The Officer, Public Spaces has four core responsibilities:

  1. Lead and supervise a team of (3) program managers who design and implement public spaces programming within their respective content areas

  2. Serve as the lead project manager for New York Cares Day for Schools, our annual day of service, revitalizing 30+ schools across the boroughs with the help of 3,000 volunteers

  3. Directly manage New York Cares’ relationships with Impact Partners — community organizations New York Cares has identified for strategic investment and increased programming

  4. Serve on cross-functional committees within New York Cares to help drive organizational effectiveness and efficiency.

 

Wondering what a day in the life of our Officer, Public Spaces is like? In this role, you will:

  • Manage a team of direct reports, including full-time, part-time, seasonal, and intern staff

  • Set clear and ambitious goals for managers’ project planning and execution, hold them accountable for exceeding those goals, and coach and support each team member to realize their full potential

  • Oversee all aspects of project planning and execution, including community outreach, partner engagement, budgeting and expense management, capacity planning, staffing, training, site visits, project evaluation, and new project development

  • Develop best practices for project planning and execution and train/onboard new team members

  • Work alongside the Corporate Relations Team to develop and implement strategic initiatives to engage individuals, corporations and civic groups in meaningful volunteer service

  • Plan and staff corporate volunteer projects on an as-needed basis.

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key partner agencies and corporate sponsors

  • Conduct community outreach to identify new partner agencies for specific program areas

  • Serve as department liaison for inter-departmental committees

  • Represent New York Cares to funders and external audiences

  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

This could be the job for you if you have previously managed a team, managed volunteer groups of 20+ people, and worked with an environmental nonprofit or in a public park.

Salary

Starting salary ranges from high 40s to low 50s.  We provide excellent benefits including comprehensive health insurance, 403(b) employer matching contributions, life insurance, and ample paid time off.
