Multimedia Designer

Are you an energetic creative who likes to produce fun and original work that engages New Yorkers in service? A savvy project manager who takes charge over design, branding, and production? Can you keep a consistent visual design language and transform marketing concepts to grow the New York Cares brand?
New York Cares is looking for a full-time Multimedia Designer to help increase the impact of our brand using compelling visuals and storytelling. The Multimedia Designer will engage audiences by producing a range of interactive content including graphics, photos, and videos for use in advertising, social media, and web. 

The Multimedia Designer will work alongside a small team of Communications staff to leverage multimedia storytelling efforts, while supporting the most visible digital content and graphic design needs of the organization. They will work in a fast paced, supportive environment while developing compelling visual communications and delivering a consistent brand experience. 


This position will help the Marketing & Communications team raise the profile of volunteerism in NYC through thoughtful, interactive and engaging design. They are responsible for generating visual concepts to accompany stand-alone copy or text, across many platforms. From monitoring brand consistency across mediums (digital and print) to creating templates in Canva to capturing photo/video and much more, this position will help tell the story of New York Cares visually.

Reporting to the Marketing & Communications Director, the Multimedia Designer will work alongside a Marketing Specialist and Junior Copywriter, while supporting other organization-wide multimedia needs. Outside of the Marketing & Communications department, they will work most closely with the Development and Program Divisions.  

External stakeholders include volunteers, donors, followers on social media, community partners, the media and general public. 

  • Develop and execute a design strategy that supports the organization’s main business objectives, such as producing and designing content for the website, email marketing, ad campaigns, in-person events, social media and more
  • Act as design lead and develop visual content that adds valuable SEO, with a focus on accessibility
  • Challenge the organization to improve visual consistency through better use of hierarchy, fonts, colors, photos, etc., and conduct visual content audits 
  • Communicate brand strategy and design with stakeholders and provide feedback to external vendors, partners and collaborators
  • Balance the needs of users and organization to achieve strategic goals
  • Develop org-wide collateral such as annual reports, t-shirts, posters, banners, event branding, business cards, one-sheeters, pitch decks, and stationery and more
  • Oversee vendor partnerships for collateral and ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of materials
  • Oversee the New York Cares photo archive and digital asset database
  • Support and engage volunteer photographers to capture photos from volunteer projects and events
  • Photograph volunteer projects, fundraisers, and other events, as needed
  • Edit photo and video content, as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

  • A Bachelor’s degree or 2-3 year’s work experience within creative field(s)
  • Familiarity with design standards, usability principles, accessibility, and design best practices 
  • Visual design knowledge, especially Adobe Creative Suite and how to set up files for web and print
  • Solid background in graphic design – fonts, hierarchy, and color
  • Ability to think strategically and make data-informed decisions
  • Highly organized and can manage multiple projects and deadlines at once
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team
  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Photography and video editing skills
  • Professional and positive demeanor, both in-person and over the phone/email
  • Collaborative and can articulate design choices with both specific and high-level feedback internally and externally
  • Experience with post-production software (Adobe After Effects or Adobe Premiere Pro)
  • Experience with audio editing software (Adobe Audition) or a willingness to learn
  • Strong writing skills, with comfort writing for a variety of audience
  • Experience with content management systems, Drupal CSM preferred
