Manager, Public Spaces & Events

Do you thrive on rolling up your sleeves, figuring out project logistics, and love helping others do good? Does revitalizing parks, schools, and community gardens sound like an exciting way to invest your time and energy? The Public Spaces team at New York Cares is seeking a Program Manager, Public Spaces & Events to engage thousands of volunteers each year to do just that. Our volunteer-led projects include painting community spaces, creating murals, planting flowers, building and maintaining garden beds, and removing invasive species. The person in this role is also responsible for planning revitalization projects with 10-15 schools as part of our annual day of service, New York Cares Day. Reporting to the Officer, Public Spaces & Events, this Program Manager is part of a 3-person unit on our Public Spaces & Events team within New York Cares’ Immediate Needs & Public Spaces department.

Responsibilities

Our Manager, Public Spaces & Events has three core responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of high-quality volunteer projects serving parks, gardens, and public libraries by leveraging volunteer leaders on the ground
  • Strategically plan and execute customized volunteer projects in partnership with local nonprofits
  • Plan and execute revitalization projects in New York City public schools for our annual day of service, New York Cares Day for Schools

 

Wondering what a day in the life of our Manager, Public Spaces & Events is like? In this role, you will:

  • Manage the design, implementation, and evaluation of a portfolio of Public Spaces’ programs with a desired impact in mind
  • Oversee all aspects of project planning and execution, including community outreach to identify nonprofit needs, impactful project design, budget and supply management, site visits, and project evaluation
  • Problem solve on the fly
  • Work well under pressure
  • Plan and lead projects for corporate volunteer groups
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteer Team Leaders
  • Cultivate and deepen relationships with local nonprofit Community Partners
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

This could be the job for you if you think volunteers are a powerful force for good, you have previously worked in an outdoor space, planned high octane events for groups of 50 people or more, or have experience transforming community spaces. You should be familiar with environmental stewardship & revitalization techniques, capable of lifting/carrying supplies and equipment weight up to 35 pounds for events and be comfortable learning new things and creating new processes. 

Salary

Starting salary ranges from mid to high $30Ks.  Candidates at or well above the level of qualifications are encouraged to apply.
