Institutional Relations Intern

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at your local nonprofit? Are you curious about the mechanisms and framework that allow community service to occur across New York City at no cost to participants? Are you a people person with great communication skills, organized and able to balance projects, and looking to make a positive impact on New York City?

The Institutional Relations Intern will report to the Foundation & Government Relations Officer at New York Cares and support the development of funding proposals, executing grant agreements and contracts, and reporting out to New York Cares’ most valuable stakeholders—our donors. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to learn more about nonprofit fundraising and administration and seeking experience in administrative, research, and writing tasks. You will join a dynamic development department that raises more than $8 million every year to support programs that benefit vulnerable New Yorkers across all five boroughs.

Every year we serve half a million vulnerable New Yorkers through our Education, Immediate Needs, and Revitalization work, mobilizing 52,000 generous volunteers to support their vulnerable neighbors.


  • Assemble and execute contracts and funding agreements with city and state agencies.
  • Research potential funders using provided resources and databases.
  • Support grant reporting by assembling materials, data, and copywriting.
  • Support proposal development with research and copywriting.
  • Correspond with donors through email and telephone.


  • At least two years of progress towards a bachelor’s degree.
  • Superb organization skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A creative drive when it comes to engaging individuals in the causes they care about.
  • The ability to work as a team and independently.
  • Microsoft Word Skills, Basic Excel Skills, Database skills a plus!
  • Experience or interest in nonprofit organizations, event planning, fundraising, or volunteer management.
  • Commitment to a regular schedule of 8-15 hours/week.


 This is an unpaid position, but the intern will be provided an unlimited use NYC MTA MetroCard. You can complete this internship for academic credit!
