Director of Volunteer Relations and Training

The Director of Volunteer Relations and Training is responsible for volunteer orientation, training, recognition, and engagement as well as the recruitment, training, and ongoing support of volunteer Team Leaders, the individuals who manage our team of volunteers on every project. It is a core role in our organization that serves as the backbone of all the programming we do.

The Director of Volunteer Relations is responsible for designing and executing the strategic vision for New York Cares in two major focus areas: (1) improving the support for New York Cares Team Leaders), and (2) increasing the diversity and cultural competency of our volunteers, with a focus on local volunteer recruitment.



  • Lead a department of 8 individuals, with direct management of 3. 
  • Redesign the training and support for our Team Leaders, with a goal of increasing their retention.
  • Update our volunteer journey pipeline to ensure that New York Cares continues to provide the most innovative and high-quality volunteer experience in our field. 
  • Work closely with the Chief Talent Officer to increase the diversity and ensure the cultural competency of our volunteers. 
  • Support the Volunteer Relations team in the day-to-day operations of the department, including customer service, troubleshooting challenging situations with volunteers, event management, department policies and procedures, and more. 
  • Serve as a resource and keep up to date on current trends in the field of Volunteer Management.
  • Create and monitor the department’s annual budget.
  • Work closely with the Grants and Foundation Officer to write relevant grants and to report on funded initiatives.  
  • Collaborate closely with other Program Directors and Director of Communications to ensure the effective delivery of volunteers to programs. 
  • Oversee our resources of volunteer trainings that are provided to New York City non-profits. 
  • Other duties, as assigned.


  • 8+ years of program-related experience, including at least 5+ years directly managing and evaluating full-time staff. 
  • Candidates with significant experience in the areas of volunteer engagement, community organizing, or pro-social digital customer service are encouraged to apply. 
  • Subject matter expertise in one of these areas: volunteer engagement, community organizing, digital customer service. 
  • Proven success in developing and maintaining partnerships.
  • Exceptional leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent systems thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and drive strategic initiatives.


Salary range in the low- to mid-$80s depending on experience. We provide excellent benefits including comprehensive health insurance, 403(b) employer matching contributions, life insurance, and ample paid time off.
