Community Engagement Associate (AmeriCorps VISTA)

The Community Engagement VISTA member plays a critical role in on-the-ground work and in implementing and evaluating New York Cares’ work in collaborating with the Associate Director of Community Engagement. The Community Engagement VISTA provides administrative support to the Associate Director of Community Engagement in developing programs and services that target parent/caregiver engagement, as well as supporting calendar and corporate programming for Six New York City Title I public schools through an account management style. 

The Community Engagement VISTA member role includes developing volunteer-led educational programming to engage parents/caregivers, evaluating and assessing needs at the schools in their portfolio. The Community Engagement VISTA works with the Associate Director of Community Engagement to build capacity in the schools around volunteer management and parent caregiver engagement as well as advocates and recommends schools for programming that addresses their needs assessment objectives.   

Responsibilities

The Community Engagement Associate role has four core pillars:

Engage parents and caregivers with their child’s education through volunteer-led programming in their child’s school with family-centric programming. Member Activities include:

  • Creating quality programs that effectively engage parents/caregivers as stakeholders in the school community.
  • Expanding custom-made programming for families at the schools in their portfolio that effectively engages caretakers and parents and creates a meaningful impact with the school community.
  • Evaluate the impact of programming on student success by using Salesforce database to track metrics and making recommendations to improve program goals based on data to identify measurable outcomes.
  • Compiling and evaluating data on parent engagement, student progress, volunteer effectiveness, community resources and neighborhood assets mapping in compliance with AmeriCorps standards

Developing and implementing volunteer-led programs that meet the immediate needs of the schools in their portfolio, students, and communities by:

  • Recruiting, training team leaders, and volunteers to support the schools and scope of work.
  • Managing relationships with the team leaders, the on-site staff members, and the primary contact. 
  • Lead volunteer orientations and trainings within targeted school communities.

Developing and implementing New York Cares’ corporate programs to distribute resources to meet needs at the schools in their portfolio by:

  • Managing ongoing and committed volunteer projects/programs at the pilot schools, including 1-2 Family Engagement nights per school.
  • Matching and staffing assigned corporate projects to schools in their portfolio and assist with managing volunteers.
  • Purchasing supplies for corporate projects with a given budget and partner needs.
  • Budgeting for programming within the pilot schools

Building relationships with community members by convening, assisting, and attending community meetings and events as often as twice a month, including Senior Leadership Team/Advisory Board, District, and one-on-one main-contact sessions.

  • Collaborate with school principals and administrators, parent groups, and (when appropriate) Community School committees to assess partner school needs and areas for impact.
  • Cultivating and maintaining collaborative partnerships with partner agencies and attend community meetings, events, and activities.
  • Work with the Associate Director in conducting community mapping and needs assessment exercises in targeted communities and schools.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree, equivalent work experience, or two years’ experience at a nonprofit organization;
  • Demonstrated commitment to community service and volunteerism;
  • Ability to make a one-year commitment to AmeriCorps and New York Cares
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Familiarity with the New York City public school system
  • Strong group facilitation skills and ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Strong background in MS Office and Salesforce, a plus
  • Ability to lift/move up to 30 pounds
  • Strong administrative skills, including an ability to manage and multi-task many projects
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team
  • Bilingual (Spanish), (required)

Salary

This is an AmeriCorps VISTA position. The VISTA Member will receive a stipend from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) of $20,640 per year and a monthly metro card from New York Cares. For more information about AmeriCorps, visit www.americorps.gov.
