Chief Program Officer

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Chief Program Officer (CPO) will drive the strategic development, execution, and ongoing refinement of New York Cares’ programs, ensuring an impactful experience for volunteers, partner organizations, and communities. Overseeing a team of 50, the CPO will lead New York Cares’ efforts to deepen its engagement with volunteers and community partners, and to develop a best-in-class digital platform for recruiting, retaining, and recognizing volunteers. 


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Program Strategy and Design

  • Lead the ongoing design, implementation, and refinement of New York Cares’ programmatic strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational vision and goals
  • Ensure high-quality execution of New York Cares programs and further develop the organization’s plan for evaluating impact on volunteer, partner organizations, and their clients
  • Oversee ongoing analysis and evaluation of program data to assess program effectiveness, improve performance, and drive future programming
  • Re-envision New York Cares’ use of technology as a tool to increase the ease and efficiency of interactions with stakeholders, ensuring an engaging, high-quality user experience


Executive Leadership and Team Management

  • Serve as key member of New York Cares’ senior management team, contributing to the development and refinement of organizational strategy and goals
  • Serve as the primary programmatic liaison to the New York Cares Board of Directors
  • Lead annual budget development process for the Program team; oversee ongoing reporting to ensure strong accountability
  • Oversee a team of 50 team members, with 4 direct reports; provide strategic leadership, professional development, and coaching to support a collaborative, innovative, and high-performing culture
  • Build consensus and inspire support and participation among staff, Board, volunteers, donors, and the broader community


Partnership Management and Thought Leadership

  • Build and sustain relationships with key funders and external partners including NYC Service, the Department of Education, Department of Parks and Recreation, Emergency Management, the Department of Homeless Services, and Points of Light
  • Identify opportunities for cross collaboration with current and prospective partner organizations
  • Engage with leaders in the sector to share insights and best practices, staying abreast of new priorities and initiatives and contributing to the broader field 



The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (required); Graduate degree in Public Affairs or Business (strongly preferred)
  • Minimum of 15 years professional experience, including 5 years in a senior leadership role
  • Track record of success in designing and implementing large-scale, complex programs
  • Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills
  • Significant experience leading a large, high-performing team across multiple departments
  • Strength in coaching individuals and teams, empowering them to elevate their levels of responsibility and performance
  • Experience with budget development and oversight
  • Experience developing digital products or platforms (preferred)
  • Experience navigating New York City non-profit landscape
  • Passion for New York Cares mission and the ability to thrive in a collaborative and diverse environment
