Meets pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service.

Because of the heat advisory for this weekend issued by NYC Emergency Management and the Health Department, select programming that may pose a risk to our volunteers and clients has been cancelled. Projects with partners who provide critical services will take place, but we encourage our volunteers to follow safety tips including drinking plenty of water and staying inside/out of the sun when possible. Please check your email for information on the status of specific projects. Thank you!

Students are more successful in school if their needs–and their families needs–are met. We try to provide as many resources as possible to our families and the warm winter coats [from New York Cares] allow students to come to school and play outside during recess.

A Milestone Year

In response to increases in the number of students living in temporary housing, New York Cares ensured NYC Community School students and families received nearly a tenth of the 100,000+ coats distributed this winter. The drive's 30th anniversary also provided the opportunity to explore new initiatives like two pop-up storefronts, a winter weather PSA with New York City Emergency Management, and a partnership with clothing recycling company, HELPSY to offer free coat deliveries to high need partners.

Countless Acts of Warmth

Donors

Longstanding partners, Bloomberg, KKR, and Halstead again paved the way as coat drive champions - responsible for nearly a quarter of all coats distributed in this year’s drive. In total, funds raised by mobile giving, companies and key sponsorships secured the purchase of more than 66,000 coats.

In-Kind Partners

Working hard behind the scenes are trusted partners offering in-kind support year after year. Vornado Realty Trust provided warehouse space, HELPSY aided in deliveries to high need partners, and trucking services were donated by Junkluggers and Flatrate Moving. True champions from the inside out.

Volunteers

Core to the Coat Drive operation was a community of caring New Yorkers dedicating their time and talents - whether they were sorting coats at our warehouse, running private collections, or acting as event ambassadors, they were present every step of the way.

Community Partners

Nearly 500 city-wide partners comprised of nonprofit social service agencies, public schools, religious institutions, and transitional housing shelters, received all 106,000 warm winter coats to distribute to our city’s most vulnerable populations.

First Ever Pop-Up Shop

In honor of the Coat Drive's 30th anniversary, New York Cares ran two pop-up storefronts, giving New Yorkers the chance to drop off new or gently used coats in person and take a closer look at how their donation helped those in need. Made possible by key partners, Our Man in Havana, Breakthrough Productions, CS Hudson, FASTSIGNS of Upper Saddle River, Gould Investors L.P., and Milford Management, the shop collected over 1,200 coats in just two weeks.
