New York Cares works hand-in-hand with a wide variety of Community Partners in New York City to make sure coats are distributed to men, women, children and infants as quickly as possible. Our Community Partners include nonprofit social service agencies, churches, schools and shelters, all of whom serve some of our city's most in-need populations.
The New York Cares Coat Drive is only collecting clean, gently used jackets and coats. You can direct other items, such as sweaters, hats and gloves, to organizations with the capacity to distribute them to those in need. A list of organizations can be found here.
The value of any coat you donate to the Coat Drive is tax deductible. You can download a receipt here. You can also get a receipt during the morning collection shifts at Penn Station and Port Authority Bus Terminal starting November 15th and at Grand Central Terminal starting December 1st. At all three sites, receipts are issued Monday through Friday, between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., through December 31st. Please note: New York Cares does not appraise coats. Values are assigned by the donor up to a maximum of $5,000.

You can receive a coat voucher at coat collection sites in Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal starting November 15th and Port Authority Bus Terminal starting December 1st. At all three sites, receipts are issued Monday through Friday, between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., through December 31st. The voucher will direct you to a nearby agency, where you can exchange it for a coat. Coats cannot be distributed at collection sites.
You can also request a voucher by emailing info@newyorkcares.org.
Sort coats
Collecting coats is only half the work. Coats need to be counted and sorted into categories before they can be distributed to agencies throughout the city's five boroughs. Volunteers are needed to help sort coats at the New York Cares Coat Drive Warehouse starting in late November. Click here to sign up for a coat sorting project.
