Frequently Asked Questions

What is Summer Welcome Corps?

Summer Welcome Corps is a citywide volunteer initiative in partnership with the Mayor's Office, NYC Tourism, NYCEM, NYC Service, and New York Cares that helps create welcoming experiences for visitors across the city throughout the summer. Volunteers serve at events and public locations in all five boroughs, providing information, assistance, and a friendly face to visitors.

Who can volunteer?

Anyone ages 18+ who meets the volunteer requirements and successfully completes the required background check may volunteer.

Do I need previous experience?

No. Training materials and project-specific information will be provided before your volunteer shift.

How often can I volunteer?

You can volunteer as often as your schedule allows!

How does the background check process work?

After registering for a Summer Welcome Corps session, you will be asked to authorize a background check and data sharing. You will then receive an email from Sterling Volunteers with instructions to complete a required Level 2 Screening. Please complete the screening as soon as possible, as processing may take up to 72 hours.

Important: Volunteers whose background check has not been completed and cleared at least 72 hours before their scheduled session may be removed from the session and notified via email.

Why is a background check required?

Summer Welcome Corps volunteers serve in public-facing roles and represent New York City to visitors from around the world. The background check requirement helps ensure a safe, welcoming, and positive experience for visitors, volunteers, staff, and community partners.

Who conducts the background check?

Background checks are conducted by Sterling Volunteers, a trusted third-party screening provider used by New York Cares. Information is handled in accordance with the authorizations you agree to during registration.
