New York Cares can bridge the gap between the people who need your services and the growing number of volunteers determined to make a difference. There are many ways nonprofit organizations, schools, or social service agencies can benefit from a relationship with New York Cares:
Our year-round programs enable you to reach more people by taking on the task of volunteer recruitment and coordination. We create and manage programs and volunteers designed to meet your organization's needs.
We plan and manage two large volunteer events each year. These days are great ways to revitalize your space and take care of crucial maintenance tasks that often get pushed to the back burner.
- Hands On New York Day – 5,000 New Yorkers team up each April to clean and revitalize parks, gardens, and community centers throughout the five boroughs. This event is generously sponsored by HSBC Bank. Applications to be a Hands On New York Day site are accepted from January through February each year.
- New York Cares Day –
8,000 New Yorkers paint a brighter future for New York City students by revitalizing and painting public schools each October. Applications to be a New York Cares Day school are accepted from April through May each year.
New York Cares manages two seasonal programs that make the winter season warmer and brighter.
- Winter Wishes for Kids and Families – Thousands of New Yorkers purchase gifts to make the holiday season brighter for 32,000 low-income children, teens, and families each year during November and December. The Winter Wishes program is generously sponsored by Robert Pohly and Julie Turaj. Applications for agencies and schools to participate in the program are accepted from July through August each year.
- New York Cares Coat Drive – New York Cares collects 70,000 gently used winter coats each December and distributes them to thousands of men, women, and children who would otherwise go without them. The New York Cares Coat Drive is generously sponsored by Health Plus. Applications for agencies to receive donated coats are accepted from October through November each year.
There are times when your organization's volunteer needs fall outside of what we do. We list referral opportunities on our Web site to help you find volunteers. Download a Referral Opportunity submission form.
We often receive calls from people looking to donate items such as books, clothing, furniture, or toys. Let us know about your organization's ongoing needs, and we'll add you to our referral lists.
